We Surf So You Don't Have To

We’ve got ads now. I wanted to see what this whole AdSense thing was all about so I signed up. Unfortunately, Google’s pretty strict about getting ads on the sites once you’ve enrolled so I had to do something. If you’re interested, scroll about 4,000 pixels down and it’s on the sidebar. I think ads and the color they’d bring would be too disruptive further up.

I just added google ads to my sites a few months ago. If they’re done in small, tasteful amounts, I think they’re okay. I’d love to figure out a way to make them time-sensitive. That is, I wish I could say “put ads on my archives, but not on pages younger than two weeks”. I have many regular readers who check every couple weeks and read in bursts. They’re not going to click the ads, and they just annoy them (though not much, I hear). The ads are really only useful to people browsing through, so I’d rather target them.

On my personal finance blog, I’m still struggling with where to place them and how many to use.

For here, though, I don’t think you’re going to get much traffic from their current location. I wouldn’t have known they were there if you hadn’t said anything. My advice — as awful as it might sound — is to use a banner ad across the top of each archive entry. Seriously. I don’t think it’ll look too bad, and more people will see it.

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it, but I love your site! I get lots of good links here for my sidebar, and generally try to provide credit to you (as “fotw”).

Heh, well, the feeling is mutual. I’m not a comic book guy, but I know I’d read that as well if I was.

Believe it or not, I don’t care if a single person ever clicks through. I need to have access to the AdSense program for other reasons and it seems that the only way that can happen is to actually host an ad. But I don’t want them to be obtrusive and, to me, anywhere above the very end would be too much for this site—which you may have noticed is a case study in minimal design.

    Thanks for reading…
